NEWSLETTERS AND REPORTS NOVEMBER 13TH, 2008 NEWSLETTER Message from President Peg Flynn This month we will say goodbye to our "Scenes of Chatham Quilt". A lucky winner will be drawn and RoseMarie McLoughlin will have to, with tears, give up our precious treasure. What a wonderful project this has been for our Club. Thank you all for your generous donations to the Chatham Food Pantry. Our Club will show real generosity to someone who will never find out where the donation came from. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Membership This month I am pleased to announce the names of 20 new members the Board has approved for membership. The Board and CWC members all welcome: Anne Carlson, Eileen Gibb, Linnea Gordon, Colleen Kolp, Ella Leavitt, Joanne Lowre, MaryBeth Morris, Monique Perry, Jacquie Scarbrough, Barbara Schweizer, Gail Smith, Kathleen Sullivan, Judy Wood, Prudence Davies, Suzanne Howard, Helen Knight, Mary Ann La Pierre, Jean Morton, Ann Poppleton, and Joan Robinson. Thanks to all of you for making The Chatham Woman's
Club the most viable club in the area! We all have something to be thankful
for including our friends in the CWC. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your
families. Fund Raising Socials 30th Annual Christmas-by-the-Sea Hospitality Quilt Project Community Service Once again we will be participating in the Chatham Fire Department Annual Toy Drive. Toys will be collected at our December meeting. Please bring unwrapped toys and remember the older children who enjoy gift certificates. (Strawberries for CD's, Old Navy, Video Store etc.) Also for the holidays, we will be supporting the Homeless Prevention Council (formerly the Interfaith Council for the Homeless) so that they can provide gifts for Cape Cod deserving families. There will be a donation box at both the November and December meetings for anyone who would like to contribute. October Correspondence WE CAN Corp., the safety net for Cape Cod women, seeks volunteers to teach very basic computer skills (Windows XP, MS Word 97, email, Internet searches) to low and moderate income women. Their purpose for taking the class is to gain skills to get better jobs. Only FIVE women to a class. Class times can be flexible. A curriculum is available. An experienced teacher is available to talk to, or to audit. The key skill is patience. Classes are 6-week, 2-hour sessions, once per week (12 hours total). Days and times are somewhat flexible but need to be consistent for each class. Start dates available for 2009. Location: Harwich Port Center. This is a rewarding experience! If you or a colleague may be interested, please call Arlene Kirsch, WE CAN's executive director, at 508-430-8111 or email akirsch@wecancenter.org. WE CAN Corp. also announces openings in its Pathmakers program, our innovative mentorship program for women in transition. Participants need to commit to the approximately 10 month program which includes monthly skill building workshops as well as individual mentoring. Women are provided support as they create goals for the year. They are carefully paired with mentors who can best assist them in attaining their goals. The workshops round out the program, offering an opportunity to learn new skills while forming a support network with other Pathmakers and mentors. Topics covered in these monthly meetings include such issues as self-esteem/empowerment, stress management, assertiveness training and conflict resolution, and if needed, financial and other "survival skill" training. Please feel free to refer women you know and to spread the word. We also always are looking for mentors. We maintain a pool of long- and short-term mentors so that the right mentor is paired with a Pathmaker. Interested women should contact WE CAN at 508.430.8111. Please visit our website at www.wecancenter.org for more information.
