Minutes from the General Meeting

February 11, 2010

The meeting was called to order by President Sharon Oudemool at 12:40 PM. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all.

Treasurer's Report - Doris Riddle presented her report through Jan. 31, 2010.
Doris noted that we have made the last payment for the cookbooks.

President's Report:
Sharon thanked Club members for their donations of clothing and other items for the veterans. She noted that there have been difficulties with members receiving multiple emails because of moving to a new server. The problem is corrected and this should no longer happen.
Hospitality members were thanked for the lovely tea: Hostess: Pam Patton; Centerpiece: Beth Holden; Food Committee: Barbara Lynyak, Barbara Keith, Nancy DeNise, Jo Ann Sprague, Edee Crowell, Clara Slockbower and Roseanne Stephens.
There is one opening for the Luncheon Social on Thursday, February 18. There are places available for the Sangria and Tapas Social on February 28th. Lisa Mahieu has volunteered to host a new Social and is looking for a co-hostess.
Sharon announced that the Board has approved an additional meeting in September for the Club. The new member tea will be held in June; this will allow new members to be included in the Yearbook and for our year to begin one month earlier
. Invitations for the Friendship Luncheon (May 14th, Eastward Ho!) will be in the March mailing along with the proposed budget and other important information. All members are urged to read the March mailing materials carefully

Department Reports:
American Heritage: American Heritage members will continue to assist Suzanne Burley with the Woman's Club archives at the Atwood House Museum on Tuesday mornings at 10:00AM during the month of February.

Literature: Note Change: The Literature Dept. will meet Friday, February 19 at 1:00 in the Chatham Community Center Club Room. The program is a Round Robin of favorite books. Also note: March and April books are switched. Shanghai Girls will be discussed in March; The Elegance of the Hedgehog will be discussed in April

Arts Department: Local writer Lynn Van Dine will speak on her book The Search for Peter Hunt. The program will be held Monday, February 15th at 1:00PM in the Community Center Club Room.

Conservation: The February 22nd speaker will be Don Lewis, Founding Partner, Cape Cod Consultants. Mr. Lewis will speak on the Turtles of Cape Cod: A Metaphor for Conservation of our Coastal Habitat. The meeting will be held in the Community Center Club Room at 1PM.

Legislative: The next meeting of the Legislative Department will be on March 16th at the home of Lois Ortendahl, 31 Squanto Drive, West Chatham. Guest speaker will be Judy Thomas, president of the Cape area League of Women Voters.

Before the Speaker was introduced, Sharon reminded everyone that cookbooks were for sale in the lobby. 650 out of 1,000 cookbooks have been sold thus far

Program: Margaret Stenberg introduced Mark McGrath who presented an informative and entertaining introduction to current technology. He introduced members to Zaba Search, an on-line phone directory, Face Book, Twitter, You Tube, Craig's List and a McGrath special, "A Good Pour"

January 14, 2010

President's Update
Three scholarship recipients were introduced. Virginia Smith is a four year recipient. She graduated from Chatham High School in 2000 and is attending Wheelock College. She will be graduating in May certified to teach Pre-K through second grade. Jessica Lucas is from a 4th generation fishing family and is a 2007 CHS graduate. She is attending the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine and is majoring in Biology and Marine Biology. Jamie Pleffner is a 2005 CHS graduate who participated in WeThe People. She is attending the University of Massachusetts in Boston and is majoring in English and Creative Writing. The club has awarded eight scholarships this past year.
Sharon thanked the club for the successful toy drive in December. The Hospitality Committee was thanked for a lovely tea: Hostess, Betty Hann; Centerpiece, Heidi Quill; Food, Meg Cimini, Kathy Roper, Winifred Everett, Cynthia Selby, Joan Bulkley, Regina McDowell, and Joanne Walker.
Sharon then reviewed the progress of the shoe drive for Afghani women and children. Dr. Robert Campbell has been receiving 100-200 pairs of shoes per day. An Eagle Scout in Chatham has taken on this project and will be collecting shoes at a variety of locations in town through February 14th.
The February Social is full; there is one place left in the January 31st Social. Sharon noted that Judi Clifford's Father-in-Law died and Marilyn Hagerty has suffered a broken pelvis.

Treasurer's Report - Doris Riddle presented the Treasurer's report through December 31, 2009.$159 toward the purchase of a bike. She also reported that $3,860 has been paid in Federation Dues.

American Heritage: American Heritage members will assist Suzanne Burley with the Woman's Club archives at the Atwood House on Tuesday mornings at 10:00AM during the month of February.

Literature: The Literature Dept. will meet Thursday, January 21 at 1:00 at the Chatham Community Center Club Room. Suzanne Burley will lead the discussion of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

Arts Department: Marty Koblish will demonstrate editing digital photography on Monday, January 18th at 1:00PM in the Community Center Club Room.

Conservation: Don St. Pierre, Chatham's Herring Warden, will speak at Barbara Gibson's house, 307 Barcliff Ave., at 1PM, Monday, January 25th.

The meeting on January 15 will feature a discussion of handwriting analysis by Lianne Boas, The venue for the meeting has been changed to Suzanne Burley's

Doll House Project: Persons interested in working on the restoration of the doll house will meet at Clara Slockbower's house Thursday, Jan. 28th at 1PM.

Before the Speaker was introduced, Sharon reminded everyone that in February we will be collecting clothes and personal items for the veterans at Brockton VA Hospital. She also reminded everyone to fill out their volunteer hours sheets.

Program: Margaret Stenberg introduced Dick Murphy, and two members of the Board of Homeless not Hopeless, Inc., a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by homeless people to bring their voices to the issues that surround homelessness. Bill Bishop, a former homeless person, described the program and its impact on the lives of some homeless individuals on Cape Cod.
